I know both are different services. And no twitter is not starting email service or vice versa (not that I know off). What I am thinking is of speculative investment that are going into Twitter. Recently a JP Morgan's Digital Growth Fund is making an investment into Twitter. This is similar to Goldman Sachs's investment into Facebook. Though its revenue is very less, the kind of investment its making is worth a dime. This fund wants to acquire 10% stake for $450m while the revenue would be just $150m. May be they are looking at some possible acquisition of Twitter by some big Media company with huge surplus cash. I suppose we can hear some wolves (investment bankers) howling.
And you would be wondering how Hotmail comes into picture over here. Microsoft is a software company and Hotmail was a free webmail service with little or no revenues. So why did Microsoft purchased Hotmail. For the answer see the video below. Microsoft purchased Hotmail for around $400m for something around 8.5m subscribers. Twitter currently has 190m users. So don't be surprised if you see some Global Media House or even an FMCG company acquires Twitter in 1-3 years.
This companies get acquired for the traction they bring with themselves and not the revenues. Whats your view on this.....
